Sunday drivers

Something magical and other worldly happened yesterday. If you didn’t know the

context you would think that I was living in a Disney movie or some psychedelic documentary on the seventies.

My family spent much of the day on our front porch, in our front yard or peering out our front picture window. What did we see? Thousands and thousands of bikes. I kid you not. Over a six hour period, you could see dozens of bikes every minute glide past our doors. There was a man on ten foot tall bike. There was a flock of superheroes on bikes: spiderman, batman and superman. There were tricycles and unicycles and tandem bikes. It was a bikapolooza. And we had the privildge of living in the front row of this other worldly adventure.

Sunday, June 22nd was the Portland Sunday Parkways. Six miles of traffic free streets were blocked off for family fun, activities and neighborly connection. It was beautiful. One of the blocked off streets just happen to be our street.

Together, my family of 5 moseyed down to Peninsula Park for a different view of the celebration. We wondered the rose gardens, learned new ways to limit our carbon emissions and rubbed shoulders with our diverse North Portland community. We even purchased bike helmets for the kids at only 5 bucks a pop.

The day could not have been anything less than a resounding success, if the parade past our home was any indication.
