Celebrate our Independents: Eat Local Week

July 4-July 11 is Eat Local Week

How would our lives and community be different if we shifted our purchases to local businesses? Does that locally produced organic hopworks beer taste better?  How about buying from local growers through People’s Food Coop? Does it taste better? Does it cost less? How does shopping local build our economy and community?

To kick off eat local week, the Sustainable Business Network of Portland and the Local First movement arranged for Michael Shuman to come to town.. Shuman’s writings are interesting, engaging and relevant to our lives and community. Shuman will discuss how communities are increasingly feeding themselves, and simultaneously reaping huge economic, environmental and social benefits. Learn about case studies of successful, innovative local food businesses in the United States and abroad, including some right here in Portland.

This upcoming holiday week we hope you will try eating and shopping locally. Consciously shift some or all of your purchases and support independent, locally owned businesses and especially our local farmers.

Do you need suggestions? Check out the SBNP Marketplace for ideas. A percentage of the proceeds from Eat Local Week participating businesses will benefit Oregon Food Bank to bring attention to the issue of hunger here in our community.
